Silent Weekend
Background:
Silent Weekend is a school sponsored event that takes place every year at Babler
State Park in Chesterfield, MO. Participants spend an entire weekend being
immersed in American Sign Language by attending seminars, participating in fun
events and games, and conversing with other camp goers . What makes this weekend
unique (and why it is called "Silent" Weekend) is that speaking is not allowed.
Participants must sign to one another (or converse in any way they can - other
than speaking). Granted, no one to my knowledge has ever mysteriously
disappeared from the park for letting a word or two slip out, but violators have
been known to be subjected to extreme amounts of humiliation and teasing.
Personally, I have gone two years in a row and have accomplished a rare feat by
not violating the rule even one time - something even my Deaf friends,
professors, and program leaders cannot boast of. Well, it's not
that I didn't speak...I just didn't get caught. I mean, it's only cheating if
you get caught...right?
